By the early 1930s the Southern Conference had swelled to 23 schools spread across ten states — unwieldy to govern and expensive to compete in.
The break came at the Southern Conference's annual meeting, held December 8–9, 1932, at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee. The thirteen member schools located west and south of the Appalachian Mountains agreed to leave and organize a new league built for closer competition and shorter road trips: the Southeastern Conference.
Frank L. McVey, president of the University of Kentucky, chaired the organizational meeting and served as the conference's first president. Competition officially began with the 1933 season, and Alabama — which defeated Vanderbilt to claim the standings — is recognized as the league's first football champion.
Growth returned decades later. Arkansas and South Carolina joined in 1991, and the league split into Eastern and Western divisions and staged the first-ever conference championship game in 1992. Missouri and Texas A&M arrived in 2012. Oklahoma and Texas joined in 2024, bringing the league to 16 members.
